The zinc forms a metallurgical, solid alloy with the steel, thus protecting the cylinders better against corrosion than any other external treatment can. Hot-dip galvanizing is carried out according to usual industrial standards and results in a sometimes irregular, rough surface structure with various shades of gray and black. The surface consists of excess zinc and may show small grooves, ridges, or scratches.
