The AP SMBC – Surface Marker Buoy Closed – is the original self-sealing surface marker buoy – often copied, never equalled.
The SMBC is simply inflated by holding a 2nd stage regulator into its opening underwater and depressing the purge button. The clever bit is hidden inside the buoy’s neck, where our unique self-sealing one-way valve closes and forms an airtight seal when inflated.
The SMBC also features a streamlined flap that covers the opening and prevents an anchor effect/water resistance when deployed in current.
The SMBC can be used as a deco buoy or inflated at the start of the dive and carried as a surface marker during the dive.
The SMBC can be easily rolled up small and stored in a pocket and attached to an external D-ring or stowed in the dedicated buoy pocket with Velcro closure on the rear left of the AP Commando and Commando Explorer jackets.
On the surface, the buoy stands upright when pulled by the line and clearly marks the diver's position. The buoy closure prevents air from escaping, keeping the buoy inflated and making it easier for the surface crew to locate the diver, or the diver can wave it on the surface to attract attention if the boat is further away.
A writing slate, name tag, or reflector can be easily attached to the top of the buoy.
