The Toddy-Style Sidemount System, named after cave diver and instructor Thorsten Wälde, is a holistic system for sidemount diving. It includes the equipment used for diving: wing, harness, cylinder attachments. Furthermore, it also describes the entire configuration: hose routing, movement sequences, use of additional equipment such as battery canisters, trim gas cylinders, sidemount rebreathers, etc.
- Wing and Backplates: lie close to the body; the use of an external backplate ensures a flat side profile of the diver even when the wing is inflated (no "turtle hump"). The special geometry of the wing ensures very balanced buoyancy with a compact shape. A concealed bungee system keeps the wing flat against the body. Any trim weight (weight belt) can be attached to the weight system of the inner backplate and is always evenly distributed on the back. This weight distribution is important for back relief, especially during long dives of several hours. This way, the diver can trim themselves with only the sidemount system worn on the body, even with a high need for trim weight, and does not require the descent of the cylinders; this allows cylinders to be handed over to dive partners in emergency situations. Additional equipment such as battery canisters, trim gas cylinders, small oxygen cylinders for a sidemount rebreather can be easily and securely attached inside or outside the backplate.
- Harness: sturdy and simple. Stiff webbing and exclusively stainless steel components. A screw connection of the webbing allows for quick disassembly, while Velcro fasteners allow for size adjustment in seconds.
- Short inflator from above over the shoulder: this keeps the diver's front clear, allows for easy inflation and deflation of the wing, and provides a good option to trim an unconscious dive partner in an emergency. The special geometry of our corrugated hose connection on the wing ensures a very secure position for this critical part.
